The Arizona Department of Administration is hosting a hiring event where applicants can participate in on-the-spot interviews and potentially walk away with job offers from one of more than 30 state agencies. The event is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 20 at Wesley Bolin Plaza on the Capitol Mall, 1700 W. Washington St. in Phoenix.

Veterans, active military and spouses are invited to attend from 10 a.m. to noon as part of the AZ Hires Vets initiative, which aims to recruit skilled workers and also connect servicemembers and veterans with opportunities in the civilian workforce. Veterans currently make up about 9% of the state workforce.

Arizona Department of Administration Chief Human Resources Officer George McNeely, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, has been organizing AZ Hires Vets events for the state for the past several years and says that this recruitment is a benefit both to the state as an employer and also to veterans who often want to “continue to serve.”

“Veterans embody the spirit of ‘service before self’ that all public servants strive for. They possess natural leadership skills and are great problem solvers, making them among the most highly trained workers in the world,” said McNeely. “It’s clear that our nation’s veterans are the best of the best, and they deserve our support.”

McNeely said that while some positions that will be showcased at the event require a degree or professional certification, most are focused on skills-based hiring. Arizona recently joined a coalition of state governments working to identify opportunities for public-sector employment for workers without college degrees but with valuable skills learned through military service, on-the-job experience and more.

Nearly 700 roles are currently open. They include:

  • Case aide, Department of Economic Security
  • Financial analyst, Department of Insurance and Financial Institutions
